eRevolution

The boom of information technology is becoming more evident every day, both in Cuba and beyond its coasts; it has become a window to undiscovered countries and societies. Nevertheless, it is a luxury we have come to take for granted, forgetting the good fortune of having so much of the world only a click away. Be it through underground musical expression or through the most recent blog, technology has revolutionized the world and its people, rallying us all in one common web.

With this conference we hope to further our understanding of how technology can be used as a bridge to overcome distance and strengthen the bonds between us and our friends and family on the island. By understanding the increasing role technology is playing in the lives of everyday Cubans, who are striving for better lives for themselves, we can help find ways to support their efforts and further inspire them to become authors of their own destinies. Join us as we explore ways to help our counterparts in Cuba take full advantage of their growing place in this interactive world.

Hacker Mindset: Technology Development in Cuba

Cuba is undergoing an information technology renaissance of sorts. Following the example of prominent bloggers like Yoani Sanchez, Claudia Cadelo de Nevi and others, many Cubans are beginning to go online and discover more of the world than ever before. This panel will discuss how Cubans are utilizing the internet (both legally and illegally), the impact of increased cell phone usage and what the current state of affairs means for the average Cuban on the island.

3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Paths to Connectivity: Comparative Latin American Perspectives

While many tend to think of the Cuban case as unique, other countries have faced their own hurdles attempting to become more integrated into the online world. Nonetheless many young people around the world are also using these newfound tools to make a big difference in their communities. This panel will explore other success stories across the globe as we hope to gain tools that we can use and share with our counterparts on the island in the hopes of replicating their achievements in Cuba.

Cuban Expression: Society, Culture and Politics

Though politics is the focus of most discussions about change in Cuba, many often overlook the important role played by the arts. From music to film to painting, Cubans’ ability to express themselves through the arts often provides a catalyst for a larger societal discussion. Panelists will discuss how technology is changing Cuban art – in all of its forms – both in the methods of production and more importantly distribution. The greater access to art and artists is allowing for artists to both reflect on and affect the “mood” of the Cuban people, spurring the possibility of change in Cuba.

12:00 pm - 1:15 pm Lunch
1:30 pm - 3:30 pm CUBAwakening: International Exchange

Cuba and the world have long had a contentious relationship, particularly when it comes to the free exchange of information. As more information flows into and out of Cuba, many ask what the real impact of travel and other forms of exchange is. This panel will talk about the impact information exchange has on the island and what we can do to foster that exchange.
